Learning

Anyone can do it, right? Yes, you can make videos with your phone. Anyone can… but can they do it well?

The thing is, yes, you probably have the technology to make just about anything in the palm of your hand. But do you understand the mechanics behind actually making a good video? Beyond the technology part of video production or creation, do you know the steps involved in telling a great story?

I have created a solid, manageable system for doing things the right way. Between my experience in television and developing curriculums to teach in community college, I have cultivated a set of best practices to help you succeed.

Sign up for the weekly newsletter to get some of the shooting and editing tips I teach in my college classes. No matter what you’re using to create your videos, the information is guaranteed to be of some use to you.

Watch this page for blog entries here where I’ll discuss how I actually practice the skills that I’m teaching in class, and how developing a good routine will help you succeed.

Hello, Class- Professor Tim’s learning blog

  • Spring Brake?

As I near the end of Spring Break 2026, I felt I’d like to share a couple of thoughts about it. Spring Break hits differently when you’re in you mid 50’s and you’re an educator as opposed to when you’re a student 30 odd years younger. Sure, we all need a break now and then,…

  • Frames, Frames, & Frames

I recently had someone ask me a photography question. When I responded with an answer about still photography, I was met with something very much like “Wait… I though your background was in television. Don’t you do video?” The answer: yes, and yes, and also I can and do take photos. For reasons unknown, it…

  • Honestly? I’d Rather Not (or Why I Ignored a House Fire)

Earlier this week I was leaving the building where I teach on campus. Just ahead of me, about to leave was another instructor. Dr. Music, we’ll call him, was a little frantic. “Hey,” he says to me “there’s a big fire down the block.” Instinctively I sniffed the air and agreed with him. As bizarre…

  • It’s All About Perspective

Sometimes a shoot doesn’t go according to plan. Here’s an example- even though it’s photos and not video, there’s still a lesson here.  This evening I set out to get some still photos of tonight’s sunset. A friend of mine- he’s basically an amateur meteorologist- messaged that tonight’s prospect for a beautiful sunset was good.…

  • Seriously… What’s the plan?

I cannot stress the importance of having a plan before you contact someone such as myself to create a video project for you. It doesn’t matter how intricate or involved a plan is, but there needs to actually be one.  I’ve been freelancing for just over 20 years, and in my experience there are three…

  • Imposter Syndrome?

I practically grew up with a camera in my hand. I can remember being 9, maybe 10 years old with one of those little Kodak 110 cameras about the size of 3 or 4 Hershey bars stacked up. It used that roll of film that (to me) looked like a little sled with 3/4 of…

  • The Most Important Tool You Have

It Probably Isn’t What You think! The absolute first thing that I tell my students is that learning video production isn’t going to be easy. It’s absolutely something that sounds easy but in practice it really is not. In order to shoot and edit great quality videos there’s a lot that you have to learn and remember. It’s…
