Sometimes We Forget

It’s not hard to do… with everything that our lives throw at us, whether personally or professionally, sometimes we forget to take just a moment for ourselves. Something… anything, any tiny scrap of peace or pleasure is sometimes more than we allow ourselves.

I say this because I’m reminded in each and every photography class that I’m teaching this summer how much I genuinely love taking photos! It really doesn’t even matter what those photos are, I just really enjoy the creativity from top to bottom. For me, it’s easy to really get lost in the process- asky my wife when we’re hiking in a national park. But that losing of myself, for lack of a better way of saying it, is incredibly therapeutic for me. Yes, technically there is work involved. And, yes, there are a number of my photographs that are available for purchase. That in no way mitigates the fact that I really feel like the act of both capturing images and editing them is good for my soul.

Is it the fact that much of my photographs are taken out in nature? Is it the fact that my brain is constantly challenging me to find that perfect angle? Is it the fact that my ADHD riddled personality is never satisfied with what I have done? Is it simply the need for me to constantly create? I cannot answer any of these questions with anything than “probably.”

At any rate, I feel as though I’m so incredibly blessed to be able to do everything that I do. I also feel the same way about the experiences that I have had in previous chapters of my life. I absolutely loved parenting my kids, but they’re grown, and gone. I loved my time chasing news for the majority of the 30 years I did it. I love that my passion has shifted to teaching, and that I’m able to still be a creative and help others learn how to achieve that as well. I love that in every stage of my life that I have been able to document it with one camera or another, and I wanted to remind you that if you don’t have that special something that brings a spark of joy or excitement that you should find it. You should find it like yesterday. Your brain and nervous system will thank you.
